Kia’s third-generation small car reached Australian showrooms for 2019 and ran to 2025, under the factory generation code BD. The badge on the boot lid varies by market; the glass behind it does not.
The names, decoded
- Cerato — the Australian and New Zealand name, also used through much of South-East Asia, South Africa and parts of the Middle East.
- K3 — the South Korean home-market name, and the name used in China. Second-hand listings and imported cars sometimes keep it.
- Forte — North America: the United States, Canada and Mexico.
- BD — not a badge. Kia’s internal generation code, and the most useful of the lot, because it is indifferent to marketing.
- GT, GT-Line, Sport — trim levels rather than markets. They alter wheels, bumpers, seats and instruments; they do not alter a door aperture.
- Koup — a two-door from an earlier generation, not offered on BD. A search that lands here has landed on the wrong car.
What the badge changes
Across those names the differences are cosmetic and commercial: model naming, equipment grades, and the lighting and bumper detail that shifted with the mid-cycle update. None of it reaches the door apertures, the pillar positions, or the shape of the glass that drops into each door — which is all a shade panel is cut to.
The variable that does matter is body style. BD was built as a sedan and, in some markets, as a hatch, and the hatch’s rear door glass and quarter glass are a different shape. So the two questions worth asking of a listing are which generation and which body — not which badge. That is also why alternate market names sit against one product rather than being split into separate listings: someone searching K3 who finds only Cerato can reasonably, and wrongly, conclude their car is not covered.
